Boulder Michigan Railroad Run

Postby Cannonshot » Sat Jan 18, 2014 2:24 am

This 256 miles ride takes in some great forest roads. It concentrates on riding abandoned railroad grades that have been converted to recreation trails. It is 256 miles long but the route can be cut short in several places.

Trestles along the way.

Cool, clear streams. For a while the trail nestles up against the Brule River which is the Wisconsin - Michigan border.

When you get to Watersmeet, get gas (if you need it) as there may be none in Marenisco. Also, take some time to visit the Ottawa National Forest Visitor's Center. They have some great exhibits that include three wolves, a black bear, a fisher, a lynx, a couple of bobcats, and other local animals - stuffed of course.

Boulder MI Waterfalls

Postby Cannonshot » Sat Jan 18, 2014 2:31 am

This 153 miles route travels the forests and takes in several scenic waterfalls along the way.

Four nice waterfalls on this route. Bond Falls is a beauty.
Image

To see Agate Falls you get on a railroad grade ORV trail for a bit and ride out onto a trestle (with railings). The falls is right beneath you and it is gorgeous. At one time the loggers had to dynamite some of the rock to eliminate some chronic catch points for potential log jams.
Image

Then on to Kakabika Falls. This is a short walk into the woods - real short. Take bug spray for the mosquitoes. I couldn't capture the magnificent beauty of this with a camera because of how it is laid out. It is well worth the visit.

Main drop is beyond the fallen tree in a narrow rock gorge.

I didn't get a good shot of the main falls. You can discover that for yourself.
